The purpose of the Peterborough Road Runners Club is to promote the enjoyment of running. Club members enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of running. Our members range in age and both sexes are well represented within the club. Most members live and run in the counties of Haliburton, Northumberland, Peterborough and Victoria. We communicate through the club's newsletter, the Kawartha Runner, the club website and weekly emails detailing times and days of workouts and runs.

Participation in marathon running in North America has grown approximately 10 percent per year for the past five years. The steady increase has had a profound effect on existing marathons, swelling the entry list of some formerly modest races to the point where they must, like megamarathons, set entry limits.

As the race approaches, marathoners want to know which pace is the right pace - the one that achieves the fastest time possible and avoids the all too common fade in the final few miles. This article discusses the three workouts that I use to gauge the best race pace for the marathoners I coach. The predictions are not fool-proof, but I find them to work for the vast majority of marathoners. As you prepare for your next marathon, these workouts can be helpful in your race planning.
